HIGHBURY’s PAST

These pages looking into Highbury’s past answer a few questions: when did the wildlife arrive, and what would it have been like to live here in other times? Thanks to books, the Internet and the memories of others, we can share what we have found out about our bit of North London and how it relates to the country, the continent and the planet.

Be curious yourself: you may find a surprise or two in store, once you begin looking into the past of your local area. Our friend Ninon is finding out about Notting Hill Gate’s past; like Highbury, it too was rural until the mid-Victorian years, when the frenzy of housebuilding  and the brickfields brought change.
