ALLIUM christophii (Ornamental onion)

Allium ChristophiiTurkey, C. Asia

A globe of metallic MAGENTA flowers with YELLOW centres arises each season from the bulb of this ornamental onion. The flower globe, 6 to 7 inches in diameter, tops a stem that is 12-24in tall.

Its foliage (strap-shaped leaves up to 16 inches long) withers before the flower globe appears. To avoid leaving a gap in the flower bed or border, Allium christophii is best surrounded with smaller flowers or foliage.

Bees’ Favourite.

The many star-shaped flowers of Allium christophii’s exotic sphere serve as a magnet for bees.

Other names: Star of Persia.
